I went outside yesterday for the first time in four days. Not for a walk, just to get something from the car. I stood in the driveway for a second and squinted at the light like it was an attack. The street had too much going on - a dog barking two houses down, wind moving the trees, a car going past. There was no way to mute any of it. I had an impulse to close the tab, go back inside. It passed, but it took a moment.
I think my eyes have recalibrated to a smaller world. A screen at arm's length, always the same brightness, always still. The outdoor sky doesn't fit. It's too wide and it won't hold still and there's no edge to it anywhere. I used to find that beautiful. I remember finding it beautiful. Do you still go outside just to be outside, just to look at something that isn't waiting for your response?
