I've been in this apartment for eight months and I feel like the rooms have gotten smaller. Not noticeably, not all at once. Just a slow persistent narrowing that I feel mostly at the end of the day when I walk from the desk to the kitchen. The walls seem closer than they should be. My range of motion through the place feels compressed. I know it's not real. The apartment hasn't changed. I've just been spending more and more time in the corner of it, at the desk, in the chair, in a space that's maybe two feet by three feet and contains everything I need.
My world has gotten physically smaller and I've let it happen because the small world is where everything is. The screen opens out into something vast and I stay tethered to it while the actual room shrinks behind me. I go outside and the scale of things feels wrong for a moment, too much open space, the sky too high. Do you ever feel the size of your daily life closing in? How much of the world do you actually move through in a given week?
